One of my favorite stats in the game, this can be either absolutely essential or useless depending on playstyle. Is a starting Strength of 4 sufficient for a melee/unarmed "dabbler," assuming ranks in Iron Fist/Big Leagues? PERCEPTION The big question for me is how useful any extra points in Strength are for melee/unarmed damage.

I tend to avoid them unless I'm planning a very melee-focused character. The higher-tier perks in this stat are fun but situational. This also grants some respectable carry weight, and with just one perk investment, you can have Strong Back if you really want the convenience. The bobblehead gets you to 5, which allows access to Heavy Gunner - useful in the event that you run across a powerful legendary big gun. It gives access to both Armorer and Blacksmith, and while I tend to find plenty of already-modded armor pieces that I can cannibalize for my own gear, it's obviously more convenient to craft them yourself.īlacksmith actually seems more of a necessity, if you plan to use melee/unarmed weapons, since the higher-end mods are rare in my experience. What follows is my thought process for a "generalist" character, assuming 4s across the board as a kind of baseline and then determining whether it's worthwhile to drop each stat in order to increase another. One way I go about this is determining which level of SPECIAL is a must-have for my character, and setting up the stats accordingly. So I've found that it's more fun to keep my options open when planning my characters, rather than building a super-specialized glass cannon sniper (say) who will get no use out of that elusive explosive minigun. However, the Legendary system means that a random drop can be excellent or worthless, depending on your playstyle.

I love Survival mode, and for me part of the fun is in planning (for the thousandth time) my initial SPECIAL stats for best effectiveness depending on my planned playthrough. This post is part theory/advice and part question, so feedback is absolutely welcome!
